•Mother’s Day Sermon
•This Sermon is dedicated to all of our mothers
Happy Mothers Day!
•An Important Day
•Today in our society we celebrate mothers
• Those without whom we would not exist
• Without mothers, there would be no family
•From a biological perspective, that’s all we need to know
•There is more than just blood, there is also relationships
•The founding principle is each of us must have had a mother
• But we must also define what motherhood is
• What’s to say what a good mother is?
• What is to say a “good” mother is one who gives birth then gives their child away
• Consider some of the Proverbs where we read…
“Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.”
-Proverbs 1:8-9
“My son, keep your father's commandment, land forsake not your mother's teaching. 21 Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they1 will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.”
-Proverbs 6:20-22
“Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.”
-Proverbs 23:25
•
•The Scriptures: Motherhood
• So we see from these verses that a mother teaches
• We learn a great deal from mothers…how to behave etc.
• But there is more to consider!
•
The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him: 2 What are you doing, my son? What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows? 3 Do not give your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings. 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.6 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; 7 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. 8 Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.
-Proverbs 28:1-9
•The Scriptures: Motherhood
• So we see from these verses that a mother teaches
• We learn a great deal from mothers…how to behave etc.
• But there is more to consider!
•The mother of the king taught her son the core values of life
•Mothers teach how to be just, how to be wise
•These are warnings, teaching, on how to behave in society and rise above it
• These are teachings which, as we grow older, remain with us
• True wisdom does not break down with age, but ripens
• Both fathers and mothers teach core tenants of life
• This requires mothers to do something important
• To learn from their mothers as well
• To seek wisdom themselves
• Their responsibility in gaining wisdom isn’t only for themselves, but for the future generations
•
“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth and with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
-Proverbs 31:25-30.
•The Scriptures: Motherhood (2)
•Strength and dignity
• Many believe a God-fearing woman is weak for submitting to the Lord
• Yet here we find it as strength and dignity
•She laughs at the things to come
• She has hope for the future
•Is it not often that women who have charm and beauty are lifted up as role models?
• Is it not often the case that our young women/children, look to magazine covers?
• Is it not often the case women think little of themselves because what the culture decides what they should be, who they should be, what they should look like?
• Mothers, train your daughters not to look at the culture for their worth!
• Your daughters are the future mothers, and being the future mothers, will train up the next generation to come
•
•The Scriptures: Motherhood (3)
• Many in our society believe motherhood is antiquated
• But, as we consider the Scriptures, we see individuals who are necessary for the betterment of the human race
•Yet, in order for this to be the case, it requires mothers to remain faithful to God
• It requires mothers to stand firm against the generational lie, and requires them to continue in steadfastness
• How many of you have been influenced by a woman who was not your mother?
• How many of you have had, still has, a woman in your life that is not your blood, but who has been faithful to God
• Even in this congregation there are many we can say, “I have learned so much from you, and there is so much more yet to learn from you.”
• The Church is designed to be a body, a family
• “Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.” I Timothy 5:1-2
•
•The Scriptures: Motherhood (4)
• Timothy is encouraged to receive those within the congregation as family members
• When we consider each woman in this congregation, do not neglect that God has called them to fulfill their motherly role in the Church
• To love, cherish, pray, encourage, and show faithfulness
• Through Christ, even the barren have children
• Through Christ, even those who have never wed have children
• Because we are all bound together in love
• This great fellowship
•The Scriptures: Motherhood (5)
• This mother’s day we are going to say, “thank you.”
• We’re going to remind them, no matter how hold you are, you can still have an effect on the next generation
• You do this by being faithful to Christ, seeking wisdom, knowledge, and fear of the Lord
• As you do this you proclaim the truth to us
• As you do this, you remind us we aren’t going to be perfect
• And that God’s grace is what keeps us going
• We learn from your mistakes, just as you do
•
•
•The Scriptures: Motherhood (6)
•Motherhood, it is never an easy job
• But the importance cannot be overstated
•So thank you!
•Mothers old and young
• Thank you for your great love for us
• We give thanks for each and every one of you
• Our biological and spiritual mothers
• We pray God’s blessing would fall greatly on you this day, and all days
