  • Genesis 2:18-25
  • Man and Woman

18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

-Genesis 2:18-20

21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman,

because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

-Genesis 2:21-25

  • Main Point
  • This latter half of chapter 2 deals with the problem of human loneliness
  • God deals with this by bringing animals to Adam, but there is no suitable helper found
  • Thus God created the first woman out of the first man
  • Man and woman are brought together to live in peace in the Garden
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman
    • Within Genesis 2 we find a number of themes
    • A key theme, however, is the creation of people
    • Last week we saw how the concept of purpose permeated the chapter
    • Man is not only created, but created with purpose
    • Though God created the animals, He made it Adam’s responsibility to name the animals because Adam was to have dominion
    • None of the animals are suitable helpers
    • None could provide what was lacking

  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (2)
    • God created woman and brought them together
    • Man rejoices over this person
    • “Bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh” it implies recognition that this person is not like the animals but like himself
    • Man also names the woman
    • Does this mean that the woman is nothing more than a servant?
    • The answer is absolutely not
    • Woman was created, “bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh” which implies she inherits the same attributes
    • The same breath of life is in her as within him

  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (3)
    • But we must also consider certain things
    • The first is that while they share high quality of being, there are still differences
    • Man is not woman, woman is not man
    • Their differences are obvious not only physiologically, both have a particular purpose
    • We find two similar yet distinct individuals
    • Both are worthy to be called human and both worthy of the image of God
    • Man has responsibility to treat her with dignity, just as woman has toward man
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (4)
    • The other thing to notice, however, is that the purposes are different
    • Woman is designed for a purpose of glorying God by being man’s helper
    • Some might think that’s condescending
    • But, we notice it is God, not man, who says it is not good for man to be alone
    • This implies that man, by himself, was lacking something
    • This is the first time something is stated as bad in the opening of Genesis
    • Without woman, man would be diminished
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (5)
    • This is what we need to grasp first, the importance of both members of the human race
    • God does not make another man, nor does He make multiple Eve’s
    • He makes one man and one woman
    • The new relationship which his brought together is further seen as the man is to forsake father and mother and cleave to his wife
    • From the beginning marriage is designed for one man and one woman
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (6)
    • Prior to marriage, the most important relationship we have is with our parents
    • From our parents we learn a great deal about how to live
    • There are things we pick up from our parents, both good and ill
    • For Genesis to say, then, that man forsakes his father and mother is significant
    • The most important relationship for married individuals is the one with their spouses
    • They complete us in a way which our parents are not able to do, and are not really called to do
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (7)
    • Does this mean children can dishonor their parents? No
    • But a great honor I could receive from my son is that later on in life he knows how to love his wife because he witnessed me love mine
    • A great honor I can receive from my daughter is for to seek a love that I have for my wife by finding someone who loves her the same
    • For my children to look to my relationship with my wife and say, “I want to reflect that.” would be a high honor
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (8)
    • In our own society marriage has taken a deep dive into chaos
    • Marriage is being defined by something other than what the Scriptures define it as
    • Why has this occurred, with sexual immorality and marriage infidelity?
    • We could look at it from a sociological perspective
    • We can consider how early in the 1900’s the family consisted of a husband, wife, and kids
    • We can consider how that changed around the time of the sexual revolution in the 60’s
    • How the Feminist Mystique and Ms. Magazine started showing up
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (9)
    • In our own society marriage has taken a deep dive into chaos
    • Marriage is being defined by something other than what the Scriptures define it as
    • Why has this occurred, with sexual immorality and marriage infidelity?
    • We could look at it from a sociological perspective

    • We can consider how that changed around the time of the sexual revolution in the 60’s
    • How the Feminist Mystique and Ms. Magazine started showing up
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (10)
    • Roles seemed to become archaic
    • Roles became a product of social construct to keep men as oppressors over women
    • Down with roles! Down with “husbands” and “Wives!”
    • Now we come to our current time when marriage is sought to be dissolved
    • By allowing complete and total liberty comes complete and total anarchy and destruction of the institution itself
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (11)
    • But can we only fault the 60’s?
    • It is caused by a deeper problem
    • What caused the women to rise up in this way?
    • What we forget about the golden days is that though they had many good attributes…they also had bad ones
    • Women were considered inferior
    • Husbands would have extramarital affairs and the women would need to forgive, while if the woman had an extramarital affair she’d be branded a harlot
    • There was a hypocrisy on the side of husbands and culture
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (12)
    • The 60’s generation saw this and simply reacted
    • The problem is they didn’t really fix it
    • The anarchy that they left has decimated the landscape
    • What is the better response?
    • What is the better response to abusive husbands, what is the response to the anarchy of today?
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (13)
    • Genesis 2:18-25
    • The way to fight against the many issues that occur in marriage is not to abolish it, but to uphold it’s original meaning
    • The recognition that both men and women are created in the image of God and have dignity, sanctity, and worth
    • That the different roles in marriage are not bad, but are meant to show our need and dependence upon one another
    • That husband is no less dependent upon his wife, as his wife is dependent upon her husband
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (14)
    • Our culture is in desperate need of Christians who will fight for marriage
    • Not only on social media, but through demonstration
    • Our children need to see husbands and lives who love one another, and deep respect for what God has called them each to be
    • The world is in desperate need of grace
    • Our children are in desperate need of grace
    • Our families are in desperate need of grace
    • I know no perfect marriage
    • Yet just as it was a miracle which brought the first man and first woman together, so it is a miracle that two broken people can be brought together to learn to love as one flesh
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (15)
    • What is further miraculous, is how somehow my wife has all the strengths to my weakness and I for hers
    • How God uses her weaknesses to lead me closer to Him in grace, peace, mercy, love and patience
    • How God uses this institution of marriage as a reflection of His love for me
    • God uses marriage as a means to draw us closer to Himself
    • This would never happen if God didn’t create woman
  • Application Points
  • Man and Woman (16)
    • Each of you women are beautifully and wonderfully made
    • You are created in His image, and deserve great respect and honor which comes from knowing you have great purpose, a purpose that could never be achieved by man alone
    • I hope you are blessed in remembering just how important you are
    • Without you, all humanity would be lacking
  • Application Points
  • The Gospel of Christ
    • Origins
    • Fall
    • Redemption
    • Glorification
